Chris Brockway –

Chris Brockway began making wine in California in 2004, and has been producing exclusively under his own labels since 2006.  Hailing originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Chris got his start in the industry working at wineries using typically modern inputs – as he likes to put it, learning what not to do.

Now Chris and his partner Bridget don’t add anything to their wines.  No nutrients, enzymes, yeast, bacteria, tannins, or other fermentation agents.  Organic farming is placed at the forefront, and while not all vineyards are certified, many of them are.  The certifying bodies in California include SIP (Sustainability in Practice) and CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers), among several others.

Chris works with many different vineyards and winegrowers, sourcing atypical grapes from overgrown and overlooked vineyards, tapping into the rich winegrowing history of California.  These wines are less fruit-forward, less alcoholic, and have less oak influence, the better to showcase a cooler climate expression of California terroir.

Broc Cellars Love White

~ 2020 LOVE ROSÉ CAN ~

85% Valdiguié, 14% Zinfandel, 1% Trousseau. The fruit was foot stomped and left on the skins for 12 hours.  Pressed into stainless steel tank where all three varieties fermented together for 21 days. The spice comes from the Zinfandel, acidity from the Valdiguié, and texture from even the tiny amount of Trousseau.  This is a 100% finished wine, meaning it fermented until it went dry using only native yeasts and went through spontaneous malolactic fermentation.  Ricetti, Rosewood + Wirth Ranch North Coast Vineyards.

Broc Cellars Love White

~ 2019 LOVE WHITE BOTTLE ~

Marsanne, Picpoul, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc are all sourced from the Love Ranch Vineyard in Madera Foothills.  At 1300 feet in elevation, it is not your normal Central Valley vineyard. The soils are made up of granitic schist. A large amount of leaves are kept on the vines to protect against heat; likewise, the crop is kept slightly larger to disperse much of the sun’s energy and prevent the sugars from spiking, helping maintain the alcohol below 13%. Love Ranch is CCOF.

The grapes were harvested in August to help preserve their natural acidity. All varieties were fermented separately then aged in neutral French oak barrels for 8 months with no S02. Malolactic fermentation was allowed to happen naturally, and the wine is not filtered.

Broc Cellars Love Red Can

~ 2019 LOVE RED BOTTLE ~

Carignan, Valdiguié, and Syrah are sourced from North Coast vineyards in Mendocino County, and Solano County’s Green Valley area.  The vines are all 70+ years old and the vineyards are dry farmed, practicing certified and uncertified organic farming.

The Love Red grapes are harvested early to highlight the fruit and preserve the acidity. The Carignan is a combination of whole cluster and destemmed fruit from four 70 year-old dry-farmed vineyards. The Valdiguié and Syrah were fully whole-cluster fermented. The wine was aged in a combination of neutral French oak barrels and concrete tanks, with no SO2 added at bottling.

100% Chardonnay grown on calcareous soil and blue marl in Escales.

~ 2019 VALDIGUIÉ PETILLANT ~

Ricetti Vineyard is located in Mendocino County, more specifically the Redwood Valley AVA. The Valdiguié plot was planted in 1960 and practices organic, conscious farming – no spraying of any pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers.

The grapes for this wine were foot-treaded and left to macerate on the skins for less than 1 day before pressing to stainless steel.  The juice was fermented until 18g/L of sugar remained, when it was cooled down for 2 weeks to stop fermentation before bottling.  The bottles were then left on the side for a long 11 months until they were disgorged by hand.

Koukou Cab Franc

~ 2019 KOUKOU CABERNET FRANC

This Cabernet Franc is grown at the Santa Ynez Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. Despite the warm days, there’s a large diurnal shift at night which helps keep the natural acidity and freshness of the grapes. Planted mostly on serpentine soils that are composed of loam/clay loam with varying amounts of chert. The vineyard farms consciously and organically but they aren’t certified.

Fresh, light, chillable, and easy-drinking. The whole grape clusters were brought into the winery and placed in concrete tank to ferment for 14 days, where they were foot stomped in the mornings and pumped over in the evenings. After that, the juice was gently pressed back into concrete tanks for 10 months of elevage.

100% Chardonnay grown on calcareous soil and blue marl in Escales.

~ 2019 CHENIN BLANC PETILLANT

Chenin Blanc is sourced from the Shell Creek Vineyard, which lies on the east side of the Paso Robles hillsides.  The vineyard has a sandy topsoil with calcareous fossilized seashells and marine matter underneath and has been owned & ranched by the Sinton family since the 1870s, with vineyards first planted here in 1972.

Whole clusters of Chenin Blanc were pressed into stainless steel tanks and fermented until it reached 15g/L of sugar.  Fermentation was interrupted by cooling the wine down significantly, at which point the wine was bottled and then allowed to warm up very gradually to finish the fermentation until dry & bubbly.  The wine was aged in bottle for 4 months before being disgorged by hand.

~ 2019 WIRTH ZINFANDEL ~

100% Zinfandel from Wirth Ranch Vineyard in Solano County Green Valley.

Zinfandel first came to California during the Gold Rush. It grows beautifully here – thriving in California’s soil. We started working with Zinfandel making our Vine Starr, then we made a White Zinfandel and use it in our Love Rosé blend. Two years ago we wanted to produce a wine with old vine Zinfandel.  We love older expressions of California Zinfandel before it got a bad name in for being too high in alcohol and overly ripe. Wirth Ranch’s Zinfandel is different from our Vine Starr – the vines are older, which produces a slightly more concentrated wine with more tannins, notes of clove, cherry and vibrant acidity. The old vine fruit is very special, and we are excited to share it with you once again.

The grapes were naturally fermented with 80% whole cluster and 20% destemmed fruit on top in a 5-ton stainless steel open top fermenter and pumped over the juice twice per day. We aged the wine in 60 gallon neutral French Oak barrels for 10 months.

Solano County Green Valley is located just east of Napa Valley. Wirth Ranch’s Zinfandel vines were planted in 1948 on the vineyard’s hillside and thrives in the volcanic, iron-rich soil. The old vines are dry farmed with low yields – getting only 1 ton of fruit per acre. Steve Wirth took over farming from his father a few decades ago. He farms the vineyard using no synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers.

~ 2019 OLD VINE CARIGNAN ~

85% Carignan, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 4% Zinfandel, 1% Palomino from Alexander Valley.  Whole clusters are put into large concrete tanks.  This wine is mostly made using carbonic fermentation.  A slow mortification breaks down the color components in the skins, infusing the juice inside the still unbroken berries with a vibrant red hue. When fully dry, it is pressed back into the concrete vessels for aging and bottled after 8 months.

This wine shows the amazing depth of flavor from these rugged, ancient vines. Having saved a remarkable ancient vineyard from imminent “Cabernetification”,  the team continue to nurture its 130+-year-old vines.  An original field-planted block, these Carignan plants are interspersed with Palomino (white variety from Jerez), Zinfandel, and Alicante.

Its decomposed sandy soils make it impossible for the vine-pest phylloxera to survive, leaving these some of the last remaining self-rooted vines in the state.
