Chris & Bridget Brockway

Chris Brockway began making wine in California in 2004, and has been producing exclusively under his own labels BROC CELLARS since 2006.  Hailing originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Chris got his start in the industry working at wineries using typically modern inputs – as he likes to put it, learning what not to do.

Now Chris and his partner Bridget don’t add anything to their wines.  No nutrients, enzymes, yeast, bacteria, tannins, or other fermentation agents.  Organic farming is placed at the forefront, and while not all vineyards are certified, many of them are.  The certifying bodies in California include SIP (Sustainability in Practice) and CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers), among several others.

Chris works with many different vineyards and winegrowers, sourcing atypical grapes from overgrown and overlooked vineyards, tapping into the rich wine-growing history of California.  These wines are less fruit-forward, less alcoholic, and have less oak influence, the better to showcase a cooler climate expression of California terroir.

~2022 GOT GRAPES? WHITE~

2022’s iteration of Got Grapes is made with 100% Cortese, and was Chris Brockway’s first time working with the grape (which is super hard to find outside of Italy!)

The grapes come from Sacramento’s Clarksburg AVA, specifically a 300-acre vineyard called Lost Slough.  The mineral-rich sandy soils are filled with decomposing seashells, giving a saline twang to the wine.

Whole clusters were foot stomped and then pressed to stainless steel tanks, fermented naturally and aged for just 5 months.  Bright, fresh, and youthful, lovely with lighter pasta and seafood dishes.

~2022 GOT GRAPES? RED~

The origin story of Got Grapes is rooted in the unexpected and we reserve it for the experiments and pleasant surprises that each harvest throws our way.

2022 was an abundant year in terms of harvest yields, and so after conducting some blending trials Chris landed on this red blend, a wine that balances a pensive structure with lighthearted fruit.

Made with Barbera, Syrah, Carignan, and Dolcetto, all varieties were fermented in stainless steel tanks, pressed and then aged in a mixture of stainless steel tank, concrete and neutral French oak barrique before the final blend.

Broc Cellars Love Red Can

~2021 LOVE RED BOTTLE~

Carignan, Valdiguié, and Syrah are sourced from North Coast vineyards in Mendocino County, and Solano County’s Green Valley area.  The vines are all 70+ years old and the vineyards are dry farmed, practicing certified and uncertified organic farming.

The Love Red grapes are harvested early to highlight the fruit and preserve the acidity. The Carignan is a combination of whole cluster and destemmed fruit from four 70 year-old dry-farmed vineyards. The Valdiguié and Syrah were fully whole-cluster fermented. The wine was aged in a combination of neutral French oak barrels and concrete tanks, with no SO2 added at bottling.

~VALDIGUIÉ PET NAT~

Ricetti Vineyard is located in Mendocino County, more specifically the Redwood Valley AVA. The Valdiguié plot was planted in 1960 and practices organic, conscious farming – no spraying of any pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers.

The grapes for this wine were foot-treaded and left to macerate on the skins for less than 1 day before pressing to stainless steel.  The juice was fermented until 18g/L of sugar remained, when it was cooled down for 2 weeks to stop fermentation before bottling.  The bottles were then left on the side for a long 11 months until they were disgorged by hand.

~2021 ‘THE BADGER’ NERO D’AVOLA~

Nero D’Avola grapes are sourced from the Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino County, on the Talmage Bench near Ukiah.  The vines are approximately 25 yeras old and farmed organically by Chris Brockway.

This year’s Nero was 1/3 aged on the skins in amphora and 2/3 fermented on skins, then pressed into neutral French oak barrels. The grapes in amphora are left on the skins through January then basket pressed back into the amphora to develop for another 5 months. The juice in barrel is left to age for 10 months.

~2021 VINE STARR ZINFANDEL~

Grapes for this wine is grown in volcanic soils, on two different vineyard sites in Sonoma County.  Harvest always starts early to highlight acidity and fresh fruit.

The fruit was destemmed and wild-fermentated in 5-ton stainless steel tanks. After pressing, the wine aged for 10 months in neutral French oak barrels. This wine is left unfined and unfiltered and contains no added sulfur during its life or at bottling. The result is a delightful, uplifted version of Zinfandel you are sure to enjoy.

~2021 KOUKOU CABERNET FRANC~

In 2010, Chris & Bridget started bringing in and making Cabernet Franc using whole cluster fermentation to capture the brighter and fresher characteristics from the grape. Making the wine in this style at the time wasn’t typical, it was an experiment in the cellar that was unique and the result was a refreshing wine. A “chillable red” was not a common descriptor for red wine at that time, but that was exactly what their Cab Franc was and still is – something you want to keep drinking, tasting even better with a chill. That first vintage making Cabernet Franc was a building block for how many of their wines are made today.

The grapes for this vintage were brought in and placed whole cluster for 10 days in concrete tank to ferment with its native yeasts. Foot stomped in the morning and pumped over in the evening. We gently pressed back into concrete and aged for 9 months in 100% concrete tanks.
