Burgenland, Austria

Illmitz lies on the east side of Neuseidl am See and is surrounded by a national park.  The unique ecosystem of Neuseidl’s reedy shoreline, and the inland salt marshes that are formed, provide habitat for many bird species and attracts nature enthusiasts to the region year-round.  The birds love to eat grapes, and are seen as a nuisance by local winegrowers, who comprise the other main industry of the town.

Christian Tschida farms 10 hectares of inherited land around Illmitz, and another 10 hectares which can be found across the lake.  His precise approaches to farming and winemaking have guided his quest for purity in wine, and the wines show exceptionally for it.

Himmel Auf Erden Weiss

Grüner Veltliner from a dense, double-planted vineyard of pure limestone, complemented by the addition of Sauvignon Blanc from a small, old garden.  Fermented and aged in large neutral barrels, this prescise wine gives delicate minerality and bright stonefruit.

Himmel auf Erden Maischegevoren

Maischevegoren translates to ‘skin-contact’ and this is Christian’s only orange wine.  Riesling, Scheurebe, and Weissburgunder are foot stomped and then left to ferment on skins for 2-4 weeks in neutral barrels.  The wine then spends another year in neutral barrel before bottling.

Himmel auf Erden Rosé

Blaufrankisch harvested over 5 days in order to capture the aromatic spectrum of his coolest, highest-elevation vineyards.  The grapes are foot-stomped, then fermented and aged in neutral barrels.

Himmel auf Erden Rose 6 x 750ml | SKU #357577 | $43.99

Blaufrankisch and Pinot Noir juice is kept in contact with the skins for just a small amount of time, what Christian calls his pink maceration technique.  So that, rather than a fully red wine, the end result is something rather dark pink and more robust, wonderfully complex and fully of flavour.

Birdscape Pink 6 x 750ml | SKU #357564 | $46.51
bottle of Les Lunes wine

Grüner Veltliner from 2 vineyard sites, one with rocky limstone soils and the other full of schist, in order to capture the aromatic dimension and layers of these two soil types.  Wonderfully complex and full of tension.  Layers of baked and candied fruits, soft herbs, saline and flinty notes are exceptionally balanced.

Laissez-Faire by Christian Tschida

Riesling from 40-year old vines that have grown on slopes of schist, with. adense layer of limestone and quartz towards the bottom of the slope.  The juice is fermented in open vats, and aged in neutral barrels for 2 years before bottling.  Enticing aromas of yellow plum, apricot, lemon and lime zest, and wild florals.  Playful acidity, saline minerality, and a lingering finish.
