Carnuntum, Austria

Christina Artner-Netzl’s eponymous wine line, made with a passion for natural wine and vibrant expressions of the grapes she grew up with.   Having been raised on the farm, Christina knew from a very young age that she wanted to become a winemaker.  She took some time to study viticulture & oenology in London before returning to the family vineyards and winery in Göttlesbrun, which is just east of Vienna and north of Burgenland.

When she’s not working on her own range of wines, Christina and her husband Peter also work in the family’s organic winery, along with her mother Christine and her father Franz.  They began converting the vineyards & winery to organics in 2013, and began the certification process in 2017.  All of the fruit for Christina’s own wines comes from family owned vineyards, and are made at the Netzl family winery.

~2021 GRÜNER VELTLINER~

This vineyard sits closer to the Danube River, and accordingly is a bit cooler as the river brings some chilly winds, especially during hot summers. This factor allows for the intensive aromatic and fizzy acidity in the grapes to be preserved. Specifically, the red gravel (iron) brings minerality and the typical “pepper” to this Grüner Veltliner.

The grapes are whole-cluster pressed into stainless steel tanks, where they see a slow and extended ferment in the cool cellars.  This wine mingles bruised ripe apple, the scent of little yellow flowers, bright acidity and peppery undertones in just the right proportions.

~2021 ORANGE CHARDONNAY~

Here, Chardonnay loves the warm conditions of the Pannonian climate, with layers of gravel laying on top of deep clay and loam. As a result, they develop their very intensive and exotic aromatics, while keeping some nice acidity on the palate, due to the cooler influences of the River Danube during the nights.

Destemmed and fermented in tank, with 18 days of skin contact.  The wine is pressed off and put back into tanks for a quick 4-month elevage on the gross lees.  This wine has lots of personality, with herbs and heaps of exotic fruit, juicy citrus flavors and exciting tannic structure.

~2021 ST. LAURENT~

The St. Laurent grapes love warm days, as they do cooler nights, and most importantly windy places – like the Edles Tal vineyard. The warm Pannonian climate in combination with the cool winds from the River Danube, therefore, brings ideal conditions for this elegant variety. The grapes are able to ripen, while also keeping their typical fresh acidity, which makes the St. Laurent wines very interesting and charismatic.

Whole bunches were carbonically macerated for an extended time – 3 weeks in closed tanks.  Afterwards, the juice was pressed off into neutral oak vats to complete fermentation, with 4 months of elevage in those same vats.  Juicy sour cherry and cranberry, some herbal evergreen aromas and some spicy, earthy notes on the palate with light tannins.

~2021 ZWEIGELT~

Zweigelt grapes love warm days and cooler nights, and most importantly windy places.  The warm Pannonian climate, combined with cool winds from the Danube river, represent the ideal conditions for their most important grape variety. The grapes are able to ripen all while keeping their fresh cherry aromas and juicy palate.

Grapes were destemmed and crushed into stainless tanks for a long and slow ferment in their cool cellars.  The wine was later pressed into neutral oak vats, where it went through malolactic conversion and rested for 4 months before bottling.  Deeply coloured and light bodied, juicy cherry aromas in the nose, red berries, soft and silky tannins, and fresh finish, this wine is great when served with a slight chill.
